La información sobre crueldades y canalladas (por el papel jugado por los canes) perpetradas por occidentales desde el inicio de la agresión a América es impresionante por su cantidad y dantesca por su calidad.3 Y sorprende que se haya querido celebrar o conmemorar el V centenario arguyendo que la humanidad es cruel por naturaleza, que todas las conquistas son violentas u ocultando los problemas morales en el desván de la vileza comparada, escudándose en que más mortal habría sido la colonización inglesa, no porque desaparecieran más aborígenes en el norte, sino porque se eiiminaron un porcentaje más elevado del total de los mismos. Una vez más debo evocar que lo esperpéntico de la hecatombe demográfica del siglo XVI no fueron los millones de nativos desaparecidos, sino que las mujeres, horrorizadas por lo que estaba ocurriendo, se negaran a parir y no repusieran los fallecidos

La construcción de estereotipos en las crónicas de Indias

In describing the New World, its inhabitants and their cultures, the authors of the chronicles of America embraced a task which could only be fulfilled from the authors' own cultural viewpoint: in the first place, chey 'could' only understand the New World they were exposed to by reference to the world they already knew; on the other hand, in order to attain their conununicative goal, these authors 'had to' describe every fact, object or cultural feature by reference to this common knowledge framework shared by them and their eventual readers. This process of cultural contextualization (or cross-cultural description) decisively determined the emergence, contents and development of the "European" vision of the New World. This paper focuses upon some of rhe most outstanding features which built up the stereotypical, European image of the American lndians and their culture, claims that the core of this stereotype may be traced back to me most ancient chronicles and the process of cultural contextualization here outlined, and puts forward a methodological approach to analyze the cultural process by which this stereotype arose and developed.Consejo Europeo de Investigació

Texto y género del relato americano de Pérez de Oliva

La aparición en el siglo XX de dos textos desconocidos de Fernán Pérez de Oliva sobre tema americano dejó sin plantear, por lo fragmentario e inconexo de su análisis, algunos problemas fundamentales, referidos, sobre todo, a su naturaleza genérica. Se trata ahora de enfocar estos problemas a partir del estudio de la propia naturaleza textual de estos fragmentos y su consideración como partes de un proyecto unitario, en el que el humanista cordobés intentó desarrollar en prosa romance un acercamiento entre la historia, la épica y los nuevos caminos de la ficción narrativa. Para ello se replantean problemas de transmisión textual, se analiza la construcción estilística de la prosa, la retórica de la composición, los recursos narrativos, los tratamientos de los personajes y los paralelismos intertextuales que muestran las dos piezas narrativas.Pendant le XXe siècle l'investigation publie deux textes inconnus de Fernán Pérez de Oliva, tous les deux sur la découverte et la conquête de l'Amérique. Pourtant, un analyse incomplet et fragmentaire n'établit pas les problèmes fondamentaux, surtout ces qu'affectent à la nature générique de ces pièces littéraires. L'intention de cet étude est celle d'aborder ces questions, en partant de l'étude de la propre nature textuelle de ces fragments et de sa considération comme parties d'un projet unitaire, avec lequel l'humaniste tenta développer à la langue castillaine un approchement de l'histoire, de l'épique et de les nouveaux chemins de la fiction narrative. Pour ceci on analyse nouvellement les problèmes de la transmission textuelle, la construction stylistique de la prose, la rétorique de la composition, les resources narratives, les traitements des personnages et les parellèlismes intertextuels que montrent ces deux fragments narratives.During the XXth century were uncovered and edited two unknown Fernán Pérez de Oliva's texts, both about the discovery and conquest of America. However, the analysis of these works was incomplete and fragmentary and it did not establish the principal troubles that the texts show, mainly these questions about its generic nature. The purpose of this study is to raise and to try answer this questions, from the analysis of this texts' textuel nature itself and from the consideration of these as parts of an unitarian design: the approach into the Castilian tongue of the history, the epic literature and the new ways of the narrative fiction. To get it I try a new analysis of the problems of the textual transmission, of the prose stylistic construction, of the rethorical composition, of the narratives resources, of the character treatment and of the intertextuals parallelism these two narratives fragments show
